The Dude’s Return Is Disappointingly Only an Advert for Belgian Beer

Last week the internet went wild to a 15 second clip featuring the jelly sandal bedecked feet of Jeff Bridges’ most iconic character, Jeffery “The Dude” Lebowski. The clip had avid fans of the Coen Brothers 1998 cult classic The Big Lebowski sharing the viral video in the anticipation of what could be a long-awaited sequel. Unfortunately, those hopes were dashed when it turned out to be just another advert which also featured Sarah Jessica Parker reprising her role as Carrie Bradshaw from the HBO franchise Sex and the City.

The advert, which will be shown during this upcoming Super Bowl in the US, has Carrie shock patrons of an upmarket bar when she declines her usual drink (the cosmopolitan martini in case you didn’t know) and goes for a pint of football hooligan fuel instead. In walks The Dude to the strains of Bob Dylan’s Man in Me and again he dismays the staff by going for a bottle of the mass-produced Belgian larger instead of his usual White Russian in a very un-dude manner.

Whilst the Coen’s have yet to make a sequel to any of their back catalogue of genre-defining films over the years the deployment of one of the most beloved characters in a cynical advert for Stella has been seen by many as a huge letdown. Who knows, maybe we’ll see Margie from Fargo drinking a can of Fosters whilst dusting down a crime scene or Javier Bardem’s character from No Country for Old Men advertising for The AA breakdown service in the near future. Here’s the advert below from Jeff’s official account. Shameless nostalgic cash grab or perfectly nuanced parody? We’ll let you be the judge.
